On August 26, 2026 at 4:19 a.m., a white Lexus sedan lost control at the intersection of W. Conestoga Rd and Main St., struck a guardrail and came to rest in a ditch off the westbound lane. The driver, 19-year-old Gionni Messersmith, appeared confused, had difficulty focusing and performed poorly on Standardized Field Sobriety Tests; a witness reported he entered the intersection haphazardly and nearly struck a tractor trailer. Messersmith refused a portable breath test at the scene and declined to give a breath sample at Berks Central Processing Center, citing breathing problems from vaping, and was arrested and charged with DUI (Title 75 3802(a)(1)), careless driving (Title 75 3714(a)) and failure to drive within lane (Title 75 3309) by Caernarvon Township Police.
