Advisory: Catalytic Converter Thefts — How to Protect Your Vehicle

New Cumberland Police warn of an uptick in catalytic converter thefts and provide tips to deter thieves and report suspicious activity.

Published Jul 27, 2026, 6:19 PM EDT | Lehigh Crimewatch

The New Cumberland Police Department reports a rise in catalytic converter thefts; converters contain valuable metals (platinum, palladium and rhodium) and can be removed in under two minutes with portable power tools. Thieves commonly target high‑clearance vehicles (trucks, SUVs, vans) and hybrids; owners are advised to park in locked or well‑lit areas, set alarms, engrave VINs, install shields or straps, and mark converters with high‑temperature paint. If you observe suspicious activity or an active theft, do not approach suspects — call 911 for emergencies or county dispatch/New Cumberland Police for non‑emergencies.
