Black River Road bridge in Lower Saucon Township to be replaced
PennDOT will replace the 1938 two-lane span over Black Creek starting June 1, with detours in place and plans to reopen before the 2026–2027 school year.
A bridge on Black River Road in Lower Saucon Township will be out of commission this summer, officials announced Monday.
The small two lane bridge is located near St. Luke’s Hospice, about a tenth of a mile east of Rt. 378, and was built in 1938.
According to PennDOT records, it is 21 feet long and approximately 26 feet wide and spans the Black Creek, which is known locally as the Black River.
An email from township officials said PennDOT plans to replace the span starting June 1.
“Their hope is to have the detours removed prior to the start of the 2026-2027 school year (in August),” it said.
While the bridge is closed, traffic will be detoured via Rt. 378, Seidersville/Hickory Hill roads, and Bingen Road.
A local winery, Black River Farms, is also located near the bridge.

Monday’s announcement closely follows the completion of the new Meadows Road Bridge, which is owned by Northampton County and opened to traffic in Lower Saucon Township earlier this month.
