On July 17, 2026, at about 9:00 a.m., Culpeper police responded to the 1100 block of Oakmont Court after a reported fight tied to a property-line dispute; detectives say the confrontation escalated when Louis Chevalier Sr., 70, and Gail Chevalier, 72, introduced a hammer and a leaf blower. The 73-year-old male victim was found unconscious inside his home with severe bruising, multiple lacerations, active bleeding, a bitten finger, and injuries investigators say include an eye gouge, repeated hammer strikes and blows to the back of the head; he received six stitches, was diagnosed with a skull laceration and depression and a concussion, and remains hospitalized with possible permanent injury. Evidence recovered included the victim’s blood on Louis Chevalier Sr.’s shirt and on the hammer, patterned marks consistent with a hammer’s head and claw, and paper towels used to clean blood recovered inside the suspects’ residence; both suspects were taken into custody and are being held without bond.
