Culpeper man charged after July 1 hit-and-run crash and DUI investigation
Police say a gray SUV ran a stop sign, struck a pickup and hit a tree on July 1; the driver was hospitalized and faces felony DUI and hit-and-run charges.
On July 1, 2026 at about 9:31 p.m., Culpeper officers responded to reports of a gray SUV striking curbs on Madison Road, entering the Southgate Shopping Center parking lot, then leaving and failing to stop at North Street and Orange Road before colliding with a northbound Ford F-150 and striking a tree near the 1300 block of Webster Lane. The SUV driver, identified as 45-year-old Shanon Fondal of Culpeper, was found unresponsive, transported to UVA Culpeper Hospital and later transferred to a Charlottesville facility; evidence indicated he was driving under the influence, and he faces felony DUI (third or subsequent offense within 10 years), felony hit-and-run, driving without a valid operator’s license and failure to obey a stop sign charges.
