On July 1, 2026, at about 9:31 p.m., Culpeper police responded to reports of a suspected intoxicated driver after a gray SUV struck curbs and left the Southgate Shopping Center parking lot. The SUV failed to stop at North Street and Orange Road, collided with a northbound Ford F-150, crossed a field and struck a tree; the pickup driver was uninjured while the SUV driver, identified as 45-year-old Shanon Fondal of Culpeper, was found unresponsive, hospitalized and later transferred. Officers say evidence indicates Fondal was driving under the influence and have charged him with felony DUI (third or subsequent offense within 10 years), felony hit-and-run, driving without a valid license and failure to obey a stop sign; warrants have not yet been served due to his hospitalization, and police ask anyone with photos or video to contact them.
