Eastern View Teens Rescue Family After Kayaks Capsize on Lake Culpeper
Three Eastern View High School students dove into Lake Culpeper on July 27 to save two adults and a child after kayaks capsized, then recovered the vessels before first responders arrived.
On July 27, 2026, at about 3:35 PM, Eastern View High School golfers Andrew Tuggle (15), Jackson Castro (17) and Gavin Cain (17) ran to Lake Culpeper and swam out to rescue two adults and a small child, who could not swim, after their kayaks capsized near a steep, boulder-strewn shoreline. Teammates called 911 while the three students brought the family to shore and retrieved the kayaks; Culpeper officers later used drone footage and Axon Translation Services to confirm everyone was safe and uninjured. City and school officials, including the police chief, the EVHS coach and the school superintendent, praised the teens for their quick thinking and bravery.
