Newtown Borough Police outline which consumer fireworks are legal, usage restrictions, and practical safety tips ahead of 4th of July celebrations as the nation marks its 250th birthday.
As the nation prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday, the Newtown Borough Police Department reminds residents that only “Class C” consumer-grade fireworks (firecrackers, Roman candles, bottle rockets, etc.) containing up to 50 milligrams of explosive material may be purchased and used by persons 18 and older; display fireworks are limited to licensed professionals with a municipal permit. Restrictions include no ignition on property without the owner’s permission, no directing fireworks at people, buildings or vehicles, no discharge within 150 feet of a building or vehicle, and no use while under the influence. The department advises buying from licensed vendors, following manufacturer instructions, keeping a water source or fire extinguisher nearby, supervising children, and contacting the Newtown Borough Police Department with any concerns.
