On August 26, 2026 at 4:19 a.m., 19-year-old Gionni Messersmith lost control of a white Lexus, struck a guardrail and came to rest in a ditch off the Main Street westbound lane. A witness said Messersmith entered the intersection haphazardly and nearly struck a tractor trailer; officers observed confusion, administered standardized field sobriety tests that indicated impairment, and say he refused a portable breath test at the scene. At Berks Central Processing Center he again refused to provide a breath sample citing breathing problems from vaping; he was arrested and charged with Title 75 3802(A)(1) DUI, Title 75 3714(A) careless driving and Title 75 3309 failure to drive within a lane. All persons are presumed innocent until proven guilty.
