Hurricane Lala strengthens near Hawaii’s Big Island
Hurricane Lala became a Category 1 storm near the Big Island Saturday, bringing dangerous winds, heavy rain and heightened flooding and mudslide risks.
Hurricane Lala strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane Saturday as it approached Hawaii’s Big Island, bringing increasingly dangerous winds, heavy rain and the threat of life-threatening flooding to the state. The National Hurricane Center said tropical-storm-force winds were already affecting parts of the island, with some of the strongest gusts occurring at higher elevations.
