Man charged in Freemansburg shooting
Paul R. Williams, 61, was arrested after a Clearfield Street shooting that wounded a man; investigators say surveillance tied him to the scene.
A Montgomery County man is in custody and facing an attemped homicide charge following a shooting in Freemansburg borough Friday.
According to the Northampton County District Attorney’s office, Paul R. Williams, 61, of Dresher, Upper Dublin Township, shot another man at 431 Clearfield Street shortly after 4 p.m. According to public records, an energy efficiency and home contracting business is located at that address.
Police said the man Dresher allegedly shot–who the DA’s office did not identify–is currently recovering from a gunshot wound injury.
The DA office’s news release said the police investigation “indicated that up to nine gunshots were fired,” one of which struck the man.
The office said Williams was identified through a review of surveillance footage, which recorded a silver vehicle police later connected to him.
It added that Williams is believed by investigators to have been “in the area of the shooting several hours before the shooting.”
Any possible motive was not disclosed by investigators.
According to the DA’s office, Williams was taken into custody Monday at his home. He was later arraigned before District Judge Alan Mege, who set his bail at $1 million.
In addition to attempted homicide, Williams is also charged with two felony counts of aggravated assault and a misdemeanor count of reckless endangerment.
As of Tuesday, he remained incarcerated at the Northampton County Prison in Easton, according to the docket filed in the case.
The docket did not list an attorney for Williams.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 11 at 10 a.m. in Northampton County District Court 03-2-04 in Lower Saucon Township.
Friday’s shooting was the second to unsettle the small town of Freemansburg in as many weeks. On Aug. 22, a 27-year-old borough resident was killed in a shooting on Market Street. Authorities have charged another woman, Lacole Diane Dotson, 27, with homicide in that case.
