On July 27, 2026, a woman reported to Manheim Township Police that a caller impersonating a Lancaster County Sheriff’s deputy used personal details, AI-generated jury notices and legal-sounding language to pressure her into depositing $5,100 into a Bitcoin ATM. The caller remained on the line, claimed a federal gag order, and instructed multiple cash withdrawals and deposits before the victim grew suspicious, declined further loan disbursement and filed a police report. She warns that legitimate law enforcement will not demand immediate payment over the phone or require cryptocurrency for fines or bonds.
