Ostrich ferns spreading in local yards
Prehistoric ostrich ferns, which predate dinosaurs by hundreds of millions of years, can reach 5–6 feet tall and spread each season through underground rhizomes.
If you look at wooded hillsides right now you’ll see that they’re almost all green, although some individual tree species are just putting out their leaves. Nature staggers growth and maturation so that not everything peaks at the same time, offering a form of protection for the environment.
