Saucon Valley students and staff are enjoying an unexpected long weekend after a threat made against the district prompted administrators to shutter the campus Friday.

In an email to parents Thursday night, the district said that after officials became aware of the threat, the decision to close schools Friday was made “out of an abundance of caution.”

Parents, students and staff received the email and a text alerting them to the closure around 10 p.m. Thursday.

All athletics and extracurricular activities on the Saucon Valley campus are postponed until further notice, and officials said information about Friday’s scheduled games would be communicated on Friday.

In football, Saucon Valley is scheduled to play Jim Thorpe at home Friday night at 7.

Students who attend Bethlehem Area Vocational Technical School were able to attend classes Friday if they provided their own transportation. If they could not attend, they would be excused, the email said.

“The safety of students and staff is the utmost priority,” Thursday’s statement said.

The nature of the threat made against the district wasn’t disclosed, and Lower Saucon Township Police have yet to release any information about the incident.
