Scam Alert: Impersonating York County Sheriff's Deputies

Fraudsters spoof local numbers and official-looking emails to demand payment for fake warrants, missed jury duty or civil fines.

Scammers are contacting residents by phone, text and email claiming to be deputies from the York County Sheriff's Office, using spoofed caller IDs, official-looking addresses (such as @yorkcountypa.gov), real officer names and sometimes AI voice cloning to sound convincing. They allege missed jury duty, active warrants or owed court/civil fees and demand immediate payment via kiosks, Bitcoin, wire transfers, Western Union, gift cards or apps like Venmo and Cash App. The York County Regional Police Department warns that law enforcement will never call to demand money or negotiate warrants—hang up and do not provide personal information or payment.
