School Bus Safety Reminder: Stop for Red Lights and Stop Arm

West Whiteland Police remind motorists that Pennsylvania law requires stopping for school buses and outlines fines and license penalties.

West Whiteland Police remind motorists that Pennsylvania law requires stopping at least 10 feet from a school bus when its red lights flash and the stop arm is extended — for buses stopped in all directions and on roads with painted or grooved dividers. The department counted 1,157 daily bus stops in the township, with the earliest at 6:00 a.m. and the latest at 5:05 p.m.; drivers may only proceed without stopping if opposing traffic is separated by a physical barrier (not a painted line). Violations under 75 Pa. C.S. § 3345.0 carry a $250 fine plus a $35 surcharge to the School Bus Safety Grant Program Account, five points, and a 60-day license suspension.
