Teen Safe Driving in Pennsylvania

Key steps and requirements for Pennsylvania teens and parents when obtaining a learner's permit and completing required behind-the-wheel practice.

Before teens begin driving, parents should consider responsibility, cost, and whether they will teach their child or use a driving school. To apply for a PA learner's permit, teens may apply no earlier than six months before their 16th birthday, must have parental consent, complete a physical and vision screening form signed by doctors, and pass the written knowledge test. After receiving a permit there is a six-month period requiring 65 hours of supervised driving (including 10 nighttime and 5 inclement-weather hours), a parental certification of those hours, and a driving curfew from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. unless the teen has proper work or volunteer paperwork.
