Two Pianos
A returning pianist’s reunion with his former mentor in Lyon triggers an uncanny encounter and a rekindled romance in Arnaud Desplechin’s sensual, Hitchcockian melodrama.
After years of self-imposed exile teaching and performing in Japan, pianist Mathias (François Civil) returns to France when his former mentor Eléna (Charlotte Rampling) invites him to perform a series of concerts in his hometown of Lyon. A chance encounter with a child who resembles him unsettles Mathias, threatening to drag him down and leading him back to his first love, Claude (Nadia Tereszkiewicz). Director Arnaud Desplechin revisits themes of charged homecomings and unexpected reunions in this sensual, Hitchcockian melodrama, featuring one of Rampling’s most delicious roles; Desplechin’s previous works include My Sex Life... and A Christmas Tale.
