Wabanaki marker missing from Cadillac Mountain amid dispute over park interpretation
The Trump administration removed a Wabanaki cultural marker from the summit of Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park, prompting a lawsuit over how national parks present Indigenous history and meaning.
BAR HARBOR, Maine (AP) — In the soft light of dawn, an Ohio tourist studied the interpretive sign at the summit of Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park, reading about how magma formed the ground under her feet.
There is one sign she and the other 4 million-plus tourists who visit Acadia annually can no longer see at the summit: a marker explaining the mountain’s sacred significance to the Wabanaki people in the region. “Today, visitors from everywhere find meaning on the mountain,” it said.
