Vehicle theft disrupts daily life for Pennsylvanians who rely on cars for work, school and medical appointments, and often leads to insurance deductibles, rental costs, missed work and time-consuming recovery. Steve Wheeler of the Pennsylvania Auto Theft Prevention Authority says auto theft affects entire communities through higher insurance costs, increased law enforcement use and the use of stolen vehicles in other crimes. Nearly half of stolen vehicles in Pennsylvania were left unlocked; owners can reduce risk by locking vehicles, taking keys, removing valuables from sight, parking in well-lit areas, not leaving cars running unattended and reporting suspicious activity.
