Vehicle theft affects more than the owner: it disrupts daily routines and brings costs such as insurance deductibles, rental cars, missed work and hours of paperwork. Steve Wheeler of the Pennsylvania Auto Theft Prevention Authority notes auto theft also raises insurance costs and burdens law enforcement; nearly half of stolen vehicles in Pennsylvania were left unlocked. To reduce risk, drivers should lock vehicles and take keys, remove or hide valuables, park in well-lit visible locations, never leave a vehicle running unattended, and report suspicious activity to police.
