When a vehicle is stolen, the impact goes far beyond losing transportation — victims and communities face financial, logistical and safety consequences.
Vehicle theft disrupts daily life — affecting work, school, medical appointments — and imposes insurance deductibles, rental car costs, missed work and recovery burdens on victims. Steve Wheeler of the Pennsylvania Auto Theft Prevention Authority says auto theft also raises community costs; nearly half of stolen vehicles in Pennsylvania were left unlocked, and simple steps like locking doors, taking keys, hiding valuables, parking in well-lit visible areas, never leaving a running vehicle unattended, and reporting suspicious activity can reduce risk.
