K9 Deni, a 5-year-old shepherd mix certified in narcotics detection and partnered with Deputy Erik Olson, received a bullet- and stab-protective vest donated by the nonprofit Vested Interest in K9s, embroidered “In memory of Billy Domenicucci.” Deni, who joined the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office in October 2022, has assisted in seizures of more than 230 lbs of methamphetamine, 11 kilograms of cocaine, six kilograms of fentanyl powder and nearly 500,000 illicit fentanyl pills. Vested Interest in K9s, a 501(c)(3) founded in 2009, provides U.S.-made, NIJ-certified vests nationwide—over 6,513 vests valued at $6.9 million to date—and accepts tax-deductible donations (one $1,050 donation will sponsor a vest); more information is available at www.vik9s.org.
