Keep Halloween Safe for Kids, Walkers and Drivers

Simple costume, visibility and traffic precautions can reduce the higher risk of pedestrian injuries on Halloween—follow these tips for a safer night.

Children are more than twice as likely to be hit by a car and killed on Halloween than on any other day of the year, so parents and drivers should take extra precautions. Choose fire-resistant costumes, add reflective tape or glow sticks, prefer nontoxic makeup over masks (test first and remove before bed), and supervise or plan routes and return times for trick-or-treaters. Motorists should watch for children on roadways, medians and curbs, enter and exit driveways carefully, be extra alert at twilight and discourage inexperienced drivers from being on the road; guidance comes from the Plumstead Township Police Department and safety authorities.
