On July 1, 2026, Mechanicsburg police received a report that a resident on the 200 block of West Maplewood Avenue was scammed after a June 26 pop-up claimed child pornography was on their computer and instructed them to call a provided number for the FTC. The victim was told to withdraw several thousand dollars and deposit it into a Bitcoin machine in Enola; bank employees had warned it might be a scam and the victim realized soon after. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Mechanicsburg Police Department; residents are advised not to call numbers provided in pop-ups or mail and to be wary of requests for payment by gift card or cryptocurrency.
