The City of North Charleston recently recovered several deceased geese and ducks from Quarterman's Pond; avian influenza (bird flu) is the suspected cause. With seasonal bird migration underway, cases can increase — the risk to dogs is considered low but the virus can affect other animals and, in some cases, humans, so backyard poultry owners should be especially vigilant. Residents are advised not to touch or handle dead or sick birds, to keep pets away and prevent them from eating wildlife, and to report sightings to North Charleston Animal Control.
