School Bus Safety Tips for Parents & Students
NHTSA-backed advice to keep children safe while waiting for, boarding, riding and exiting school buses.
Lampeter‑Strasburg and many other local school districts return to class this week; the NHTSA offers safety tips for parents and students who ride the bus. Key guidance: arrive at the stop at least five minutes early and wait three 'giant steps' (six feet) from the curb, only approach when the bus is stopped and the driver says it’s okay, use handrails when boarding, never walk behind the bus, cross at least five 'giant steps' (10 feet) in front while making eye contact with the driver, and tell the driver if an item is dropped near the bus.
