E-Bikes in Pennsylvania: Safety Reminders and Regulations

Shippensburg Police remind riders that e-bikes are treated as vehicles under Pennsylvania law and outline required behavior, age limits and safety practices.

The Shippensburg Police Department reminds residents and visitors that e-bikes are considered vehicles in Pennsylvania and must follow the same rules of the road as traditional bicycles, including obeying traffic laws, yielding to pedestrians, riding with traffic and using bike lanes when available. State requirements include a minimum age of 16 to operate Class 1 or Class 2 e-bikes, wearing a properly fitted helmet, and not riding on sidewalks unless a local ordinance allows it. The department also urges riders to wear bright, reflective clothing, use front and rear lights at night, keep both hands on the handlebars except when signaling, and avoid distractions such as using a phone while riding.
