Eastern Pike Police Warn Residents About Sweepstakes and Prize Scams
Scammers pose as legitimate companies to claim you’ve won a prize but demand upfront “taxes” or fees and ask for money via wire transfer, gift cards, crypto or other payment methods.
Scammers contact victims claiming they’ve won large sums or valuable prizes and then demand payment of taxes, fees or other expenses before releasing the award, often directing payment by wire transfer, electronic apps, prepaid or gift cards, or cryptocurrency. Eastern Pike Regional Police advise never to send money or personal banking information, to independently verify unsolicited prize claims, preserve all communications and financial records, stop contact if you suspect fraud, and report the incident to local law enforcement or your financial institution.
