Mechanicsburg resident loses about $5,000 in Facebook Marketplace/Cash App scam
Victim deposited fraudulent checks after calling a fake Cash App number and lost roughly $5,000 while selling an item online.
On September 10, 2026 at about 8:45 a.m., a resident in the 400 block of West Simpson Street reported being scammed out of approximately $5,000 while attempting to sell an item on Facebook Marketplace. The buyer agreed to pay $75 but directed the seller to call a provided Cash App number; after the victim gave bank details, multiple fraudulent checks were deposited and funds withdrawn, leaving only the $75. The phone number was later determined to be fraudulent; anyone with information should contact the Mechanicsburg Police Department (case MBG-2026-09-0464).
