Mechanicsburg seller loses about $5,000 in Facebook Marketplace/Cash App scam
A Mechanicsburg seller was tricked into wiring funds and depositing fake checks during a Facebook Marketplace transaction, losing about $5,000.
On Sept. 10, 2026, at about 8:45 a.m., a resident in the 400 block of West Simpson Street reported being scammed out of approximately $5,000 after attempting to sell an item on Facebook Marketplace. The buyer purported to use Cash App but directed the seller to call a provided number; while on the call the victim gave bank details, multiple fraudulent checks were deposited and funds withdrawn, leaving only the agreed $75 sale amount. The Cash App number was determined to be fraudulent and Mechanicsburg Police ask anyone with information to contact the department (case MBG-2026-09-0464).
