During National Child Passenger Safety Week the North Charleston Police Department urged drivers to secure children in properly sized child safety seats, reminding motorists: "Buckle up, South Carolina. Every trip. Every time." Nationwide in 2024 an average of two children under 14 were killed and 349 were injured daily while riding in passenger vehicles (677 killed and over 127,000 injured that year), with 39% of children who died unrestrained; car seats reduce the risk of fatal injury by 71% for infants and 54% for toddlers in passenger cars (58% and 59% in light trucks), and NHTSA estimates child restraints have saved 11,606 children under age 5 since 1975.
