Yuval Erez, an economics professor at Lehigh University, spent three years in the Israeli military where he followed orders with little room for independent thought. That experience led him to value the freedom he now has in the classroom, where he focuses on teaching students to think creatively and critically; after his service he took a gap year before resuming his education.
