Holiday travelers face highest gas prices in four years
AAA says Pennsylvania and Lehigh Valley drivers face the highest Memorial Day gas prices since 2022, with statewide averages near $4.64 per gallon.
While gas prices in Pennsylvania have declined slightly this past week, AAA East Central said travelers this Memorial Day weekend should still expect to see the highest average gas prices in four years.
According to AAA, the average price for a gallon of gas in Pennsylvania is four cents lower this week at $4.637.
In the Lehigh Valley, there was also a price drop at the pump. The average price for a gallon of gas at the start of the week was $4.492 compared to $4.534 last Monday.
A year ago, the average price was $3.207
After some consistent declines, the national average price for gasoline rose towards the end of last week. Monday’s national average was $4.51, a penny less than last Monday, but nearly 50 cents higher than a month ago.
Travelers are preparing to hit the road in record numbers this week, and drivers will be facing the highest Memorial Day gas prices since 2022.
This time last year, AAA said the national average price for a gallon of gas was $3.17.
Meanwhile, oil was trading around $107/barrel Monday after spending most of last week trading around $100/barrel.
With elevated oil prices and expected higher demand, prices could continue to push upward through the week and into the weekend.
