School Bus Safety Reminder — Stop for School Buses

Reminder of Pennsylvania’s School Bus Stopping Law, required stopping distances, exceptions, and penalties for violations.

Published Oct 8, 2026, 11:28 AM EDT | Lehigh Crimewatch

With school back in session, West Whiteland Police say the township has 1,157 daily school bus stops (earliest 6:00 a.m., latest 5:05 p.m.) and remind motorists to obey Pennsylvania’s School Bus Stopping Law. Drivers must stop at least 10 feet away when red lights flash and the stop arm is extended, from all directions and on roads with painted lines or grooved dividers; wait until lights stop, the arm is withdrawn, and children are safe. The only exception is travel in the opposite direction on a highway separated by a physical barrier (concrete median, guide rails, or grassy median); violations under 75 Pa. C.S. § 3345.0 carry a $250 fine plus a $35 surcharge to the School Bus Safety Grant Program, five points, and a 60-day license suspension.
