During the annual 100 Deadly Days of Summer, the North Charleston Police Department and South Carolina Department of Public Safety joined Alabama, Florida, Georgia and Tennessee for "Operation Southern Slow Down," a weeklong education and speed-enforcement effort on interstates and state highways. NCPD officers, SC Highway Patrol troopers and State Transport Police concentrated on reducing high-speed driving and promoted NHTSA safety reminders—such as increased stopping distance when speed doubles and always wearing seat belts. South Carolina reported 382 speed-related fatalities and 14,718 people injured in speed-related collisions in 2023; nationally there were 12,151 speed-related fatalities in 2022, and 35% of male drivers aged 15–20 involved in fatal crashes in 2022 were speeding.
