NCPD Joins Operation Southern Slow Down to Reduce Highway Speeding
Weeklong regional enforcement and education campaign targets excessive speeding on interstates and state highways during the 100 Deadly Days of Summer.
The North Charleston Police Department and the South Carolina Department of Public Safety joined four other Southeastern states for Operation Southern Slow Down, a weeklong speed enforcement and education campaign focused on interstates and state highways during the 100 Deadly Days of Summer. South Carolina collision data lists speed among the top five contributing factors in 2023, with 382 speed-related fatalities and 14,718 persons injured; nationally there were 12,151 speed-related fatalities in 2022 and 35% of male drivers aged 15–20 involved in fatal crashes in 2022 were speeding. The NHTSA offers safety reminders—allow extra stopping distance, brake before curves, set a good example for young drivers, and always wear a seat belt.
